Twelve people, including at least 7 children, were taken to nearby hospitals in Texas after an apparent “over-chlorination” of a lazy river pool, Houston officials said.

The Houston Fire Department responded to a report of a chlorine spill at around 5 p.m. local time Saturday after multiple people accidentally ingested the chlorine water at a lazy river pool in Houston, the HFD said in a statement on Twitter.

“[Seven] children and [three] adults have been transported to the hospital,” the HFD said in the statement. “Several went by private vehicle.”

In a Saturday night update on Twitter, HFD Fire Chief Samuel Peña said 12 people in total were transported to hospitals.

“Incident is under control,” Peña said. “Cause appears to be an over-chlorination of the pool(s).”

Peña said exposure to over-chlorination can provoke asthma, nausea, skin and eye irritation.
