A man in Tennessee was fatally struck by a car while he was chasing after a dog, police say.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Monday when authorities responded to a vehicle collision in Kingsport, about 85 miles northeast of Knoxville, the Kingsport Police Department said in a news release.

An investigation into the collision revealed Darshankumar Karshanbhai Patel, 49, was traveling “lawfully” in his 2020 Honda Odyssey minivan when a pedestrian, identified as 33-year-old Gordon Gale Johnson, ran onto the road. Officials said Johnson ran directly into Patel’s path while chasing a dog.

“Mr. Patel was unable to avoid a collision, and his minivan struck Mr. Johnson,” the police department said.

Johnson was seriously injured in the collision and was taken to a local hospital. Officials said in an update Monday afternoon Johnson died at the hospital.

Officials did not say why Johnson was chasing after the dog, if he was the owner of the dog or comment on the dog’s condition. The department said their traffic unit division is investigating the incident, and no further details are expected to be released until the investigation is complete.
