A Home Depot employee in California was shot and killed while trying to stop a shoplifter, authorities say.
Police received reports about a man bleeding inside a Home Depot location Tuesday afternoon in the city of Pleasanton, less than 20 miles southeast of Oakland, the Pleasanton Police Department said in a news release.
Officers arrived on the scene and attended to the victim, 26-year-old Blake Mohs, who was taken to a hospital where he later died of his injuries, police said.
Witnesses at the scene said Mohs “attempted to stop a theft in progress,” and a struggled ensued before Mohs was shot. The suspects left the area shortly after Mohs was shot, witnesses told police.

Victim ‘confronted’ shoplifter
In a Wednesday update, police said Mohs was a Home Depot loss prevention employee.
Authorities said detectives found Mohs “confronted” a female shoplifter “who resisted and shot him.”
Suspects found in Oakland
Nearby authorities were notified the suspects were seen fleeing in a vehicle, and 15 minutes after the shooting took place, Alameda County Sheriff deputies located the vehicle in Oakland and detained the suspects.
Police said the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Benicia Knapps, ran to a getaway car driven by 31-year-old David Guillory following the shooting, with Knapps’ child inside the vehicle.
When the suspects fled the scene, a handgun was found in an intersection near the Home Depot. The child was released to relatives following Knapps’ and Guillory’s arrests.
Pleasanton police confirmed to USA TODAY the charges for the suspects:
- Benicia Knapps: Murder, robbery and conspiracy.
- David Guillory: Felony evading, child endangerment, conspiracy and delaying/obstructing arrest.
Police added Knapps is currently hospitalized, but will be booked once released.
“As it is still early and an ongoing investigation, it’s likely additional charges will be sought against the two suspects,” police said.
‘Our associate and friend’
Police said Mohn was a well-known member in the community “who helped keep customers and staff safe,” and he was planning to get married in the summer.
Home Depot said in a statement to USA TODAY it was “heartbroken over this senseless tragedy.”
“Blake was our associate and friend, and our hearts go out to his family and everyone who knew and loved him,” the company said.
