A Marine was released from custody after being question in connection with the discovery of a missing 14-year-old girl in the barracks of a base in Southern California.
The girl, who was found in the barracks in late June, had run away from her grandparents’ home earlier in the month before being found at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, roughly 40 miles north of San Diego.

When did the girl run away?
The girl, who has not been named because she is a minor, was first reported missing to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department June 13 by her grandmother. The grandmother told the sheriff’s department the girl had run away four days prior on June 9, and had previously run away, but always returned home quickly.
Her information was entered into multiple missing person databases, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which informed other law enforcement agencies of her disappearance.
When was the girl found?
Military police at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton found the girl June 28, and she was returned to her grandmother. Detectives interviewed her, and the family was offered services, according to the sheriff’s department.
Who is the Marine?
The Marine was taken into custody June 28, according to local reports. He has not been publicly identified.
Jeff Houston, division chief of media and congressional affairs with NCIS, confirmed to USA TODAY the Marine was released back to his command. Houston said no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made, as of Tuesday.
Houston said NCIS will not comment or confirm details related to the investigation, which is ongoing.
