One of two Brimingham, Alabama firefighters who were shot on Wednesday has died
Jordan Melton died Monday, five days after what police are investigating as a “targeted attack.”
Melton had graduated from the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Recruit Academy one month ago
“My heart is hurting today,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin wrote in a statement. “Jordan was a vibrant young brother who was full of life. He loved to talk sports as much as he loved good barbecue.”
According to WVUA23, the other firefighter shot, Jamal Jones, is in serious condition.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue is holding a blood drive in honor of both firefighters on Wednesday, July 19.
Birmingham police investigation continues
During a news conference on the day of the shooting, Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond indicated that the shooting was targeted.
“We are trying to see why would someone want to target one of these fire stations in Birmingham,” Thurmond said.
The shooter entered Fire Station #9 through an open bay door while Melton, Jones and a third firefighter were conducting routine equipment checks, according to Thurmond.
Investigators have not released an update.
Metro Crime Stoppers of Alabama increased its reward for information leading to an arrest to $15,000.
