LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / June 2, 2022 / A new study from the time tracking app DeskTime has found that countries, where people work the most overtime hours, are 10.2% less productive compared to countries with the fewest overtime hours.

Users from countries with the highest rates of overtime worked on average 1 hour and 3 minutes extra/day with an average productivity rate of 60.3%. Meanwhile, users from countries with the least hours of overtime worked on average 15 minutes extra/day and their productivity rate was 70.5%.

The data showed that the 5 countries where people worked the most overtime hours in 2021 were Malaysia, Moldova, Ireland, Estonia, and Andorra. The top 5 countries with the least overtime hours in 2021 were Saudi Arabia, Israel, Peru, the Netherlands, and Colombia.

The US ranked 15th out of 20 countries with the least overtime hours worked. According to DeskTime data, Americans in 2021 worked 17 minutes extra every day at a productivity rate of 66.3%.

”In 2021, the majority of us still worked from home due to COVID-19. Employees have repeatedly stated that remote work, among all its benefits, also has a negative effect on their work-life balance, as it’s sometimes difficult to separate work from home. And the data shows it – some DeskTime users worked as much as 400+ overtime hours a year. This, however, has been detrimental to productivity. We hope that these findings will make employers pay more attention to their employees’ wellbeing and workload, and encourage them to take better care of themselves as it’s the only way to higher productivity.”

Productivity on DeskTime is defined as the time spent on productive apps divided by the total time tracked, then expressed as a percentage. DeskTime users can self-select which apps they consider ”productive” and ”unproductive”, depending on their type of work.

Altogether, the sample included 40 countries – the top 20 with the most and the least overtime hours. DeskTime is currently used in 135 countries globally.

DeskTime has previously studied the link between overtime work and productivity, and come to a similar conclusion – staying late in the office not only hinders employee work-life balance but also makes them less productive in the long run.
