Summer heat waves are oppressive and can make it hard to get dressed in even the most basic garments. But scorching temperatures in June and July haven’t stopped New Yorkers from choosing chic attire over simple staples. Many people on the streets have found ways to keep cool without sacrificing their overall style.

Standout looks have incorporated thin vertical stripes, tennis clothes and cowboy boots paired with anything but Western wear. There have been plenty of suits and sports jackets, and even a few instances of knit, suggesting that rules of business casual remain in place. There have also been a lot of black clothes, even when temperatures reached 90 degrees and above. Good (or great) linen, however, has been surprisingly harder to spot.
