DETROIT — The largest of the Great Lakes has taken on a new title: the most Twitter famous.
Although the Lake Superior account has been around since 2009, and has seen its fair share of viral tweets, its take on the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade on Friday has launched it to superstardom.
“This lake vehemently stands with women having the right to choose,” Lake Superior tweeted Friday.
On Tuesday, the account was trending nationwide on Twitter. As of Wednesday morning, its tweet about the right to abortion garnered more than 12,600 retweets, 109,800 likes, plus viral TikTok videos about the account.
When users, like conservative activist Tom Fitton disagreed, Lake Superior was not afraid to clap back.
The account had around 40,000 followers before it Friday, according to the Wayback Machine. Now, just a few days later, it has surpassed 175,000.

Even people like Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and actor and activist George Takei joined the fun.
Up until June 24, when Roe v. Wade was overturned, the account had stayed away from most political topics – aside from water policy. The account generally serves two main purposes: a fun escape with a comedic approach and a place to highlight the importance of water quality and the environment.

In the past, Lake Superior frequently retweeted beautiful pictures of itself, findings from new scientific studies and water safety tips.
