Michigan police walked in on a shocking scene Saturday morning when officers said they discovered a woman trying to drown her own child in the bathtub.
Police were called to the home in Albion about 10:30 a.m. Saturday after operators said they could hear children screaming and asking for help in the background of a 911 call, according to the Albion Department of Public Safety. Responding officers said they heard similar sounds coming from inside the home when they got to the scene, about 100 miles west of Detroit.
After kicking down the door to gain entry, officers said they entered the home to find a 35-year-old woman, whose name has not yet been released, holding her 2-year-old child underwater in a bathtub. Officers were able to intercept and give the child CPR until the 2 year old coughed up the water and began to breathe again on their own.
Police said the woman is a mother of four, with children ranging from 2 to 15 years of age, all of whom were present in the house at the time. The 15 year old who called the police appeared to have no injuries, along with an 8-year-old sibling who was also unharmed.
The two youngest children, however, aged 2 and 4, had suffered stab wounds and cuts, police said.
The youngest child, who was the victim of the attempted drowning, sustained stab wounds to their chest and throat, while their 4-year-old brother suffered cuts. Investigators also believed the two younger children, along with their mother, had possibly ingested cleaning fluid, police said.
The mother was arrested and taken to a hospital, while the children were taken separately to a hospital in a nearby city. They later had to be airlifted to a facility in Ann Arbor but were last known to be in stable condition.
The Albion Department of Public Safety and Calhoun County Sherriff’s Office did not respond to immediate request for comment.
