Here are some developments from regions across Ukraine:
Kyiv: Russia confirmed Friday that it fired missiles at the capital late Thursday and said it destroyed an arms factory, while Ukrainian officials said at least one residential building was hit and a journalist who worked for U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe was killed in the strike.
The attack, as U.N. Secretary General António Guterres ended a visit to Kyiv, shook the relative calm that had returned to the capital in recent weeks after Moscow shifted its offensive to eastern Ukraine.
Kharkiv: The regional governor of Kharkiv said Saturday that fierce battles raged around the city of Izyum as Russian forces fought to advance, and that shelling hit areas in the east of the wider region overnight. He said on Telegram that artillery fire had abated to some extent in the city over the past 24 hours, but he called on residents to remain vigilant and refrain from large gatherings, even for funerals.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said Saturday that Russian forces deployed military units as reinforcements to Kharkiv and particularly around Izyum.
Mariupol: The Azovstal steel plant and its environs have come under fire as besieged Ukrainian fighters cling to their last holdout in the southern port city. Ukrainian officials have reported a dire situation inside the plant as food and water supplies dwindle, with civilians and wounded soldiers in need of medical care.
Mykhailo Vershynin, chief of the Donetsk region patrol police, told The Post that the area around the facility was being bombarded by Russian forces. “We are ready to leave the territory of the Azovstal plant,” he said. “But this requires guarantees.”
In the Donbas region: Russian forces are pressing an offensive on the Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts, where the Luhansk governor said Saturday that artillery shelling has damaged dozens of houses in recent days. Local officials said earlier this week that damage to infrastructure has left many residents without electricity or water.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said Saturday that troops have repelled more than a dozen attacks in Donetsk and Luhansk over the past 24 hours. It said earlier this week that Russian forces captured some urban settlements as they sought to expand their grip over the two provinces that make up eastern Donbas region.
