Smoking and our body mass index may cause more than 200 medical conditions

Our smoking status and body mass index (BMI) are together linked to 226 medical conditions, from heart failure and hernias to sleep apnoea and nail disorders.

Anthony Webster at the University of Oxford used data on 500,000 participants of the UK Biobank study to estimate the extent to which smoking or our BMI influences our risk of various conditions. BMI is a measurement that uses your weight and height to calculate if your weight is healthy.
