Mr Haley often touches on her background – she was born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa in Bamberg, South Carolina, to Punjabi Sikh immigrants from India who owned a clothing boutique. She has said she endured racist taunts throughout her childhood and, in a video announcing her presidential bid, said she grew up “not Black, not white – I was different”.
