A deadly explosion at a Eastern Pennsylvania chocolate factory Friday night killed two people, injured eight others and left nearby buildings and homes damaged and destroyed.

Meanwhile, a search continued Saturday for five people still missing after the blast, officials said.

West Reading Borough Police Department Chief of Police Wayne Holben said the explosion took place just before 5 p.m. at the R.M. Palmer Co. plant in West Reading.

Officials on Saturday continued to investigate what caused the explosion at the plant about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

The identities of the dead, injured and missing were not immediately known.

West Reading officials said Saturday afterthey could confirm only two fatalities. The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency had earlier told the Associated Press there were five fatalities, citing county emergency management officials, but after an update from the county also indicated that two had died and five were missing.

A survivor found

Initially crews had been searching for six missing people but late Saturday morning, Holden confirmed one survivor had been found in the rubble, the Reading Eagle reported.

“The discovery provides hope that others may still be found,” Holben said during a press conference.

The outlet reported Hoben could not provide any further information about the survivor or their condition.

Rescue workers were continuing a thorough search using specialized equipment and techniques. Officials said dogs and imaging equipment were being used to look for signs of life during the careful removal of debris.
