A Missouri dog set off a grease fire that extensively damaged its family’s house when it reached on top of a stove and accidentally turned on a burner, security video captured inside the home shows.
The dog put its paws on the stovetop, activating the touch controls. A pan from dinner the night before was on one of the burners, and once the burner turned on, grease in the pan ignited, said Chris Denney, division chief at the Southern Platte Fire Protection District.
“New appliances are being seen with touch controls that activate by the simple touch of a finger … An animal’s paw can also activate these types of controls,” Denney told USA TODAY. “Please use built-in safeties if available on appliances when not in use and accessible by children and/or animals.”
The June 10 ordeal was caught on an indoor security camera at the family’s home in Parkville, Denny said.

No one was home except for two dogs, but neighbors saw the smoke, Denney said.
Both dogs were saved and no one was injured.
