Dispensaries in New Mexico have seen a jump in business since April 1, and it hasn’t just been in recreational sales. Our state has also reported more than a million dollars in medical marijuana sales so far this weekend. The recreational marijuana floodgates have opened, and dispensary owners are seeing more business than ever. Trishelle Kirk is the CEO of Everest Cannabis. “Yesterday was huge. I pulled up to our store in uptown and just said wow. I think what we saw yesterday was many people who are excited about legally buying cannabis in New Mexico,” Kirk said. New Mexico in more than $2.7 million total on opening day, and local dispensaries enjoyed every bit of it. Kirk said, “Overall, demand surpassed our expectations at every one of our locations. It was probably about 20 to 30 percent more than we expected.” On Friday, our state brought in around $800,000 in medical marijuana sales. Kirk said this surge in demand isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. “We opened five additional stores, and we also had to ramp up production to meet this new market’s demand. As we look at federal legislation to legalize, it’s going to create room for conversations about what cannabis is and how it can benefit New Mexicans,” Kirk said. Kirk said she expects to see recreational and medical marijuana sales continue to increase as cannabis becomes more accessible to new Mexicans. As for how much money the state is making from cannabis sales, the state is expected to release the latest tax revenue on April 4.
