As often happens in a cult of personality, the cult ends up taking on the characteristics of its leader. After all, the Republican party couldn’t put together a platform in 2020 because it didn’t know what it believed anymore. They had to wait for Trump to tell them. So, given the fact that Trump is an anti-intellectual, unprincipled, uneducated man along with being seethingly angry, petulant, petty, motivated only by personal grievance and revenge, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Republican party has taken on the same characteristics, characteristics that Joe Scarborough, former “ultra -Republican,” says has put the entire Republican party in “self destruct mode.”
We can only hope that Scarborough’s right. There is certainly an alternative interpretation or at least a different possible end result. It is an end result that is as committed to democracy and the rule of law as their leader. And they have set up the situation such that a minority can succeed.
Joe took them to task:
“You start looking at things over the last couple months where you have the Republican Party openly opposing veteran healthcare, a plan that veterans who fought for us in Iraq and Afghanistan desperately need,.
You have Republicans who said they would not take part in a Jan. 6 Committee hearing to get to the bottom of an attempted fascist takeover of American politics, and now they’re complaining about the fact that they are not at the table.”
“You have them opposing a bill to keep us competitive with China, something everybody knows we need — we need to build these plants in the United States, it is absolutely critical — they vote against that out of petulance, They vote against that, and then you look at these bills on the state level — I’m sorry, I need to keep going because it is so crazy, the miscalculations they are making. They are against universal background checks when 90 percent of Americans support them. They’re passing legislation at the state level that are making 10-year-old victims flee their states in fear that they might get arrested or something terrible might happen to them if they don’t have a forced pregnancy, and I could go on and on.”
“This is a party that seems to be in self-destruct mode, and they don’t seem to be terribly bright. Just look at Dr. [Mehmet] Oz, look at the San Francisco venture capitalist [J.D. Vance] in Ohio. Look at the crackpots and the kooks they are about to nominate in Arizona. This is a party that is in self- destruct mode every day.”
We can only hope. “We” includes former Republican Joe Scarborough who understands why this is happening.
They are doing what Trump and the MAGAs demand. If the Democrats are for it, they are against it. If the Democrats look to be passing something that will help the country, they will block it just to keep the country down and blame it on Biden. Does this not sound like someone you know? Does this not sound like a group whose motivations are simple and narrow. And does this not sound as dangerous as the last guy who fought to keep control of the country?
