Some of the Trump issues seem to be seeping through. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Republicans who openly oppose Trump don’t face elections. The ones that face the voters must still toe the line. Mick Mulvaney is a great example. He hopes that Trump loses the primary if Trump runs. If Mulvaney were running for something, he’d probably support Trump.

From The Hill:

Mick Mulvaney, who served as former President Trump’s acting White House chief of staff, on Monday said he hopes Trump does not win the 2024 GOP presidential primary if he runs for reelection.

“We’ve got younger people, it’s time for Donald Trump to sort of go to the sideline, continue to push the policies that made him so popular,” Mulvaney said on NewsNation’s “Banfield.”

“We defined my party, but we can have all the policies without the baggage, so I hope he doesn’t run,” the former GOP congressman continued. “And if he runs, I hope he doesn’t win the nomination for Republicans.”

Again, there are surely a lot of Republicans in Congress and the Senate that feel the exact same way but see what is happening to Liz Cheney and the people that voted for impeachment and care about their political career more than the ability to stand up and say what they want about what’s best for the country.

It is one thing to come out on television, like Mulvaney, where perhaps he becomes more interesting because a former Trumper is now getting out of Trump World (that’s a one-way trip, perhaps liberating). Some of his criticism might bite a little harder.

Still, it’s interesting. Mulvaney saw Trump work up close, and that gave Mulvaney an idea of Trump’s dangerousness and inability to do the job. Mulvaney is probably being sincere, even though it is a wily media move. After all, we’re covering it.
