On his Hinge dating profile, Yuwoon Choi answered a prompt: “All I ask is that you … be open to dating someone in a wheelchair.”
The prompt, in conjunction with his profession as general counsel at Samsung, caught Danni Liu’s eye when she came across his profile in May 2023. She matched with him and started a conversation, but he responded at snail’s speed. She thought he wasn’t interested.
Four days after they matched, Mr. Choi, 37, asked her out on a date for the following Saturday. (Not the upcoming Saturday.)
“He had me waiting for two weeks, basically,” Ms. Liu, 30, said. “From my experience, if someone really likes you, they want to see you sooner.”
But in his defense, when they connected, he was in a “pessimistic streak,” he said. “Having a disability obviously brings challenges to dating. I felt, maybe I’m just not going to find the one.”
Mr. Choi, who goes by David, was very much interested in Ms. Liu, but he was “playing defensive,” he said. He was hesitant to pour himself into a potential connection because he anticipated that it wouldn’t work out anyway. And he didn’t propose to meet that upcoming Saturday because his assistant was off that day and wouldn’t be able to drive him to the date.
