Russian journalist Oksana Baulina killed while filming in Kyiv by Russian shelling

Russian journalist Oksana Baulina was killed while filming in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, making her at least the fourth journalist to die in the country as the conflict rages on after Russia’s invasion. 

Baulina was working as a correspondent for The Insider when Russian troops shelled a shopping center in the Podil district, a historic neighborhood in Kyiv, the site said in a statement. 

A civilian was killed in the incident and two more people were wounded and hospitalized.  

“The Insider expresses its deepest condolences to Oksana’s family and friends,” the statement read.

Baulina previously worked as a producer for the Anti-Corruption Foundation but had to leave Russia once the organization was deemed an extremist group. She continued to report on corruption inside the Russian government after fleeing. 

According to The Guardian, Baulina, 42, started her career in magazines like Time Out Moscow and InStyle before switching to more political work.

Shaun Walker, a reporter for The Guardian, said she was “funny, dedicated and extremely brave” in a tweet. 

“She was putting a new life together in Warsaw after having to flee Russia due to Navalny links and determined to do important journalism. Another victim of this awful senseless mess,” he wrote.
