Law enforcement officials across the country searched Monday for inmates who escaped custody in Montana and Pennsylvania.
Officials are searching for Chadwick Shane Mobley, 42, a suspect who was arrested and later escaped while he was being transported from Montana to Michigan to be arraigned on a murder charge, according to the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office.
Mobley’s escape comes after Michael Charles Burham, who is wanted in connection with a homicide in New York, escaped from a Pennsylvania prison Thursday. Burham was arrested in South Carolina in May and charged with kidnapping an elderly couple.
The search for Eric Abril, 35, ended Monday when he was taken into custody after he fled from a hospital in a Sacramento suburb. Abril was arrested in April in connection to the shootings of a California Highway Patrol officer and two hostages in an incident that left one person dead.
Inmate escaped in Montana during transport to Michigan
Mobley was being transported by private company around 10 a.m. Sunday when he escaped at a gas station and convenience store, according to the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office. His transport was contracted by the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the sheriff’s office. The Plains Police Department said Mobley, who removed his handcuffs and ankle shackles, is “dangerous and should not be approached.”
Mobley was identified as a suspect in the 2011 killing of Andrea Eilber, who was shot in the head at the home of a relative in Michigan, after evidence at the scene was tested for DNA, the attorney general’s office in Michigan said in a statement last month. He was apprehended in June in Libby, Montana, and was awaiting transfer to Michigan to be arraigned on murder and firearm charges, according to the statement.
Suspect in May killing escaped using bed sheets in Pennsylvania
Federal, state and local agencies are still searching for Burham, 34, who escaped Warren County Prison on Thursday using a rope made of bed sheets, according to police.
Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police said Sunday police located stockpiles or campsites Burham might have used while in the woods.
Burham was being held on a $1 million bond after he was charged with kidnapping an elderly couple and stealing their SUV at gunpoint in May. He is also a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old woman in Jamestown, New York, according to a criminal complaint the FBI in Buffalo filed against him in the kidnapping case.
District Attorney Jason Schmidt of Chautauqua County, New York, said last month Burham is the “prime suspect” in the May 11 killing of Kala Hodgkin and a related arson. At the time of Hodgkin’s death, Burham was also facing a charge that he raped her, according to the FBI.
California inmate escaped from hospital
Abril was taken into custody, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said Monday. More than 70 law enforcement personnel from numerous agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals, assisted in the search for Abril, the sheriff’s office said in a social media post earlier Monday.
Abril was taken to the Sutter Roseville Medical Center in an ambulance Thursday and was recorded fleeing the hospital early Sunday, Roseville police said. Authorities have not said why Abril was taken to the hospital. The sheriff’s office said it has launched an internal investigation to determine what happened before Abril escaped.
Abril was charged with murder, aggravated kidnapping and attempted murder of a peace officer in connection with the shooting at a Roseville park and booked into the Placer County Jail without bail.
