The incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. in the 3000 block of Garrison Street NW, west of Rock Creek Park.

D.C. Police Chief Robert J. Contee III said the officers responded to a report of burglary and found a man with a metal stake who they believe had smashed numerous windows at the residence.

Contee said the man approached the officers with the stake. He said the officers initially fired stun guns but that they did stop the man. The chief said the officers then shot the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Embassy or Peru later Tweeted: “The Ambassador, his family, the Residential staff, and the secret service agents are safe.”

Authorities said they are investigating why the man was at the residence.

Contee also said that two Secret Service officers were being evaluated at a hospital. The Secret Service said no officers were injured.

This is a developing story.
