Before Q1 2019 Twitter used to report to numbers for MAU (Monthly active users) and mDAU ( monetizable daily active users) but later they stopped reporting MAU

Let’s see the difference :

This is from 2019 Q1 which was the last time MAU been reported :

  • MAU: 330M
  • mDAU: 134M

Big difference between two numbers (196M or 59%) which means monetizable is only 40% of total MAU

Let’s see the definition of Monetizable users

We define monetizable daily active usage or users (mDAU) as Twitter users who logged in or were otherwise authenticated and accessed Twitter on any given day through Twitter.com or Twitter applications that are able to show ads.

Additionally, our calculation of mDAU is not based on any standardized industry methodology and is not necessarily calculated in the same manner or comparable to similarly titled measures presented by other companies

MAU definition

We define monthly active usage or users (MAU) as Twitter users who logged in or were otherwise authenticated and accessed Twitter through our website, mobile website, desktop or mobile applications, SMS or registered third-party applications or websites in the 30-day period ending on the date of measurement. Average MAU for a period represent the average of the MAU at the end of each month during the period.

So the difference between MAU and mDAU is bots/spams accounts can’t see ads .. Twitter is no longer reporting MAU so we don’t know the ratio of MAU/mDAU but it’s clearly ugly.

Not to mention there’s still 5% or less spam accounts in mDAU LOL

We have performed an internal review of a sample of accounts and estimate that the average of false or spam accounts represented fewer than 5% of our mDAU during the quarter.

TLDR;
Elon could be right based and their calculation metric is full of shit
